Game Sometimes does not Respond while Typing

When typing in chat or searching for items in creative the game sometimes does not respond and I have to restart the game in order to do anything. This happens on servers, on singleplayer or anywhere you have to type something in-game. Sometimes the game doesn't freeze but I have to click where the text is to continue typing. However most of the time the game freezes completely and I can do nothing. I've tried updating Java, restarting the game several times but nothing seems to work.
