Water Does not update after being absorbed by sponge

When I place a dry sponge in water it will absorb the water but when I remove the sponge, the water just sits there and doesn't do anything. I can place blocks inside the area. The water only updates itself when a block is place or broken next to it. These pictures show me placing the sponge, the removal of the sponge, me placing the block in the area and the water not changing and me placing a block on the edge to update the water.
