Crashes after launcher, before opening worlds

If I choose the latest version (1.12.2) profile in the launcher, the full screen opens (with the Singleplayer, Multiplayer, etc., choices), then it freezes and I get a message that Java crashed. If I choose an earlier version in the launcher, like 1.10, it works fine. I have rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled Java, and updated my graphics driver. I tried creating another profile in the launcher that uses 1.12.2 but it crashed in the same way.
