java.lang.NullPointerException: Unexpected error

I can start the launcher, get to the game, but when I go to make a new world, minecraft hangs on a blank dirt screen and then crashes. It's worked fine before. Oh, and I also kept getting Runtime installation errors while setting up minecraft, but I did get past them in the end.
