Unknown Host impossible

my friend asks me to join a server but whatever i do it keeps telling me unknown host.
i know this is impossible since he can play on this server and at the time was.
i have tried following things: manually typing the IP, reinstalling minecraft, asking for alternative ip's (side note there were none)
