execute if block doesn't work when used alone

It works for all the other execute if commands so expected it to also work for execute if block. Currently it comes up with an error.
I tried with the command:

/execute if block ~ ~ ~ stone

Error:
Unknown command at position 28: ... ~ ~ stone<--[HERE]
