Hopper on top of trap chest, w/ trap chest open, item dispensed is deleted

When I had a minecart hopper poop an item into another hopper that is above a trapped chest it works fine. The second hopper dispenses fine into the trapped chest.

However, when I have the trapped chest open the second hopper will NOT dispense an item into the trapped chest. Instead that item is deleted.
