Disappearing Chunks

At random times on my server chunks would disappear from under me, leaving only Glass Panes/Blocks, Doors, Plants, and Entities. I would fall through and die, but otherwise it did no harm (besides losing me all my items). I don't know if this is a bug or a glitch, but i would appreciate if someone could look in to this.
