When I try to join a server, it loads, then it crashes my minecraft, but only for certain versions.

When I try to join a server, it loads then it crashes my minecraft and brings it back to my launcher. The only versions that work are 1.8 or the versions before that. I've tried multiple severs and I've tried uninstalling minecraft and reinstalling.
