Lava lighting bug

I've been having this problem through multiple Minecraft versions. Most of the lava I encounter underground is present, but either partially or entirely unlit, until I break a block next to it. This makes mining extremely hazardous, because I can't always tell right away when I'm around lava because there's no glow.
