Nether portal mid-air spawn

Whenever I make a portal in the Overworld and travel to the Nether, it spawns me very high in the air with no portal or ledge to stand on. I literally instantly fall to my death every time I travel to the Nether. I have moved the Overworld portal several times and it has the same result. Any ideas?
