Using 6 wooden planks to make 4 wooden stairs doesn't make sense.

It doesn't make sense for you to use 6 wooden planks to only get 4 wooden stairs.
Each stair block is technically 3/4ths of a block. So in reality we should be getting 8 stairs from this crafting recipe. Where is the rest of my wood going?
