Tamed wolf/dog diseappeared

I was doing an "expedition" with my wolf/dog then when I was returning to my shelter, my dog disappeared, I am sure that I didn't tell him to sit he was following but then he disappeared, he wasn't barking or anything. And no he didn't die cause like I said he didn't make a single sound, I am dead because of this cause a skeleton shot and I could not defend.
