when i load any multiplayer server my game crashes

i will try to load up my minecraft and it comes up with not responding, it happens every so often, but every time i load a multiplayer server it instantly comes up saying minecraft not responding. also when it has crashed, it says an unexpected issue has occured and the game has crashed.
