Pressing escape while something is moving will cause it to flicker

I took out a diamond sword & quickly pressed escape. I could see it flickering in the bottom right corner. It was as if I kept selecting it over and over. Then I started flying around then I quickly pressed escape. The background began to move back and forth as if my player was glitching
