Pressing 1-9 to move output of furnace onto hotbar gives no XP

Had some smooth stone waiting to be taken out of my furnace, pressed "5" to put it in my inventory and got no XP from it. Thought it could be because I was level 27, but I went to my next few furnaces and they all gave me XP.
