Creative mode item delete

When you have an item on your hotbar, you pick something up from the inventory as normal and quickly click on an item and then delete it, it drops the item, doesn't delete it. This isn't lag, seeming as I have a gaming PC which can run minecraft at full settings on 60 FPS.
