@a selector doesn't work with the /recipe command in multiplayer

Typing this: /recipe give @a *
gives this error:
Player '@a' cannot be found
instead of giving all players all recipes.

Same for @e, but I'm not sure why you would want to use that.
All other selectors work as expected.
