Items going to the side before going below in a hopper

I have a system for my automatic sugar cane farm that includes hoppers, but ive noticed that the sugarcane rarely goes to the side before going down in my hoppers to the storage chests.

Im using the item elevator that you use a 3x3 area and a dropper / dispenser on the bottom, that goes to a water stream that pushes the sugar cane to the item collection hoppers that goes to my storage.
