When attempting to place block or object, it doesn't place!

I have just downloaded minecraft (yesterday), and while spawning in some blocks to create a home, the blocks don't get placed, they just destroy what I'm looking at! I've looked at a lot of websites, but I can't find a solution. I've tried torches, flowers, resetting the game, right-clicking, left-clicking, and so on. idk what to do!
