Mining Speed too quick

Mining with a stone or wooden pickaxe is significantly faster than previous versions. In 1.4.7 it was around 1 second for a stone pick to mine a stone block. Now it's like 0.4 seconds.
No enchants or potion effects. Possible server error? Using Minecraft pre-release server without plugins or anything.
Iron pick works fine.
