New Minecraft launcher will only launch once or not at all

The new launcher suddenly appeared on my computer on 2/12/17. I didn't download it, it just appeared. Now if I play and close the game and come back to relaunch it the launcher will not even open. I had to restart my pc to get it to open.
Yesterday 2/17/17 the launcher opens and I click to start playing and the game doesn't even load anymore and restarting my pc no longer opens the launcher. I am unable to get the launcher or game to load at all!
