Shift right clicking on a mob spawner with a spawn egg does not spawn the mob

The bug

When I sneak+place a spawn egg on a mob spawner, the mob is placed in the spawner rather than spawning it next to the spawner. This means you are unable to spawn a mob while looking at a spawner without changing the entity to be spawned.

What I expected to happen

The mob would spawn next to the spawner (G9dRsJK (1).jpg)

What happened

The mob was placed in the spawner (lwXbPXG (1).jpg)

Place a mob spawner
Get a spawn egg
Sneak+place your spawn egg on the spawner
