Cannot connect to minecraft servers due to a Java error

Upon trying to connect to any minecraft servers, I receive the error message "Internal Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException" This has been happening for any server I try to connect to

What I want to happen is to be able to connect to the minecraft public servers

What actually happens is I receive the error message "Internal Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException"

This has started with the 1.11 update has given this problem.
