Melting

Melting w/e in a furnace then wandering away from the furnace to continue mining (for example) will paus the melting (In my experience). Is this supposed to happen?
I filled all my furnaces with stone, iron, etc and when I returned from my mining it wasnt nearly finished. Considering I was away mining for more than 15 minutes this clearly must be an issue?
