Cannot eat after holding shield

After updating to 1.11.2 I crafted a shield and held it. I then tried to eat and could not. Even after removing the shield, I could not eat. This happened while playing hardcore. Started a new game in creative and did the following:

Equip iron armor
Equip diamond sword
Equip shield
Hold apple
SAME BUG - Could not eat the apple
