Elytra Issues

I'm having issues taking off with the Elytra, I've followed it tutorial complete and have looked up multiple videos online but just sometimes I cannot activate it. I just off a high cliff and press the jump button in midair and sometimes it still doesn't activate. Please look in to this if you can.
