Minecraft crashes immediately after opening

What I expected to happen was...:
for minecraft to open as usual when I clicked 'Play' on the launcher.

What actually happened was...:
minecraft opened, but immediately crashed.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open the minecraft launcher
2. Click the 'Play' button
3. Wait for minecraft to open
