Chest height does not allow you to walk through a door

When creating my storage room, I wanted to sink my chests into the floor. I ran into an issue because I sank the chests one block into the floor. When walking over the chest, I see that the player dips down. Issue lies with walking over the chest into a two-block-high hallway. You cannot walk into the hallway. Its almost as if walking over the chest makes you bump up higher than the block surrounding the chest.
