destruction progress glitches near tall grass

While breaking a block near tall grass the destruction progress is very laggy
TO REPRODUCE:
Place one piece of tall grass on the ground. Place a two block high pillar of iron blocks right behind that grass. Now try to break the top block of iron on the pillar. The block destruction is extremely laggy.
I was breaking the iron blocks with the following:
Iron pickaxe enchanted with Fortune and Unbreaking
