system lock up when changing to fullscreen mode in game

1. Launch Minecraft in Windowed mode.
2. Select multiplayer.
3. Select server and connect.
4. Once in game, hit esc.
5. Click video options.
6. CLick fullscreen button to turn it on.

Results: Computer locks up. Occasional scrambled images, appears to be buffer from GPU. Have to hold down the power button to shut down.
