Minecraft closes when uploading world after update

On my son's ipad, I approved the purchase of Fantasy upgrade £2.29. Now he cannot access his world. The program says it is Generating Terrain and then the program closes.

Please can you advise? I suggested removing Minecraft from iPad and downloading again but he thinks he will lose the world he has spent ages creating? Can you backup iPad versions?
