Chunks are regenerating

I'm having a very serious problem with Minecraft. Basically, as soon as chunks are unloaded and then reloaded, they will automatically regenerate. Also, upon restarting, the chunk I was in was regenerated, and since I was underground, I started suffocating immediately. My render distance is set to 8 chunks, but other than that I'm not sure how to reproduce this bug.
