Observer and furnace result in crash

If you set up an observer to check for updates from a furnace, it results in a crash. Here are the steps done to result in crash:
1)Set observer block
2)Set furnace where the observer will be checking
3)Add fuel to furnace

It then crashes Minecraft entirely at that point.
