can't place blocks

I purchased Minecraft for my child. She's been playing for a few weeks, then suddenly she could no longer release/place blocks or anything else she is holding. (sorry, I don't play so I don't know the technical term)

What I expected to happen was...:
place blocks/build

What actually happened was...:
can't release blocks - can 'destroy stuff' but not build
