Mobs lagging

I built a mob farm using a lava blade as a grinder. At first all was well, when suddenly a skeleton came out of the shoot. Naturally I tried to attack him, but I couldn't hit him, and he didn't react to me. Then down came another, and another, 10-20 various monsters floating out the shoot. Then all at once, they flew back up the shoot and started coming down again.
