Breaking blocks with Haste 255 plays no sound

I gave myself Haste 255 using /effect and then gave myself a pickaxe. (Diamond)
I began breaking blocks. I noticed that there was no sound. I thought that this was maybe due to there being too many blocks broken at once. So I broke one block expecting it to play a breaking sound. It did not.
