To craft items i have to have them in a certain order

This is for PC. I noticed when i try to craft items so far its only when i put them in the crafting table in a certain order that they will allow me to craft them. For example i am trying right now to craft a wooden pickax. I put in 3 wooden planks and 2 sticks, even multiple of each, and nothing. Then i was just throwing in random planks and sticks at a time in different boxes and realized that if i put in the ingredients in a certain slots, i can craft them, but if i put sticks or planks in different parts of the craft table's 3x3 slots i cant create the same objects even though nothing has changed besides what slots they were in. My brother has this game on PS4 and no issue like this.
