Pillar Quartz Block cannot be crafted back into Quartz Slab or Quartz Stairs

I've noticed that in SMP, contrary to what the wiki states, I am not able to craft Pillar Quartz Block into either Quartz slabs or Quartz Stairs. The output window in the crafting table UI remains blank. Running vanilla SMP on 13w09b.
