Error rendering world error when logging onto 1.10.1 server from 1.10.1 client (both Windows 7 x64)

When connecting to a multiplayer world on my home lan, the world briefly appears on screen, then crashes back to the launcher with a dialog box named "Error rendering world" JIRA issues : MC-103978, MC-103981.

I tried uninstalling and removing the /users/username/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft folder and then reinstalling but the same error results
