Server Error On Shutdown: 670 ERROR Attempted to append to non-started appender File

Upon shutdown of a personal minecraft server (1.9.4) the following error is produced:

[09:25:15] [Server Shutdown Thread/INFO]: Stopping server
[09:25:15] [Server Shutdown Thread/INFO]: Saving players
2016-05-11 09:25:15,670 ERROR Attempted to append to non-started appender File
2016-05-11 09:25:15,676 ERROR Unable to write to stream logs/latest.log for appender File
