Detector rail doesn't always detect

Detector rails are not always detecting carts passing over them. Sometimes they only detect the cart as it moves in a specific direction but not the other. I've tried destroying nearby blocks, replacing all of the rail, pushing and powering the cart... does not seem to affect the issue. Could not replicate the problem in my offline map.
