I cant play minecraft on my pc

I started the minecraft app thing and the play button appeared with everything else but I wanted to play in 1.8.8 so I can play on my favorite server but once I changed it it stopped working and now I cant even play in 1.9.x. I deleted it and re-downloaded it twice and nothing worked. it closes like its supposed to then it comes back to the window with the play button and says crash report
