Sound disappears after random play time when music is off

Steps to reproduce:

1) Turn music down to 0%.
2) Open a world and start playing. Keep playing for several minutes.

Expected result:
All non-music game sounds are present indefinitely.

Actual result:
Non-music game sounds are present for a few minutes, then after a random amount of time, all sounds disappear completely.

If I play with the music on (any volume between 1% and 100%), the sounds never disappear.

Doing any of the following brings the sounds back:

  • Go to video settings, change mipmap to a different value. Game hangs for a while, then resumes and sounds are back.
  • Switch resource packs. Again, game hangs for a while, then resumes and sounds are back.
  • Restart minecraft.

F3+s and F3+t do not work for me.

Is there a way to see visually when minecraft is switching songs? My theory is that the sounds disappear whenever the music "clock" decides it's time for the next song, but I don't know how to confirm this. The length of time between songs feels roughly the same to me as the length of time it takes for the sound to disappear, but I didn't actually time it.
