Fence gates prevent use of melee weapons against mobs on other side

Fence gates allow arrows through when open, as expected, but any other item used to attack mob on other side collides with hitbox of fence gate.
I set up 2 gates on top of each other. Open top most, and can't kill with sword or similar.
