Massive block lag in singleplayer

When I play on singleplayer, the game is unplayable because of a massive block lag. To recreate the problem, all I need to do is create a new world. Then, whenever I try and mine any type of block, it pops back and I have to mine it again. Walking and using items, however, is not affected.
