I cant see the map, that is supposed to appear on the characters hand

i was going to paly Minecraft survival mode, and i pressed the button, starting map. When i entered the world. I tried to watch the map, but it didnt appear on the characters hands and there wasnt the button: create map. Is this a bug? im sorry if my English isnt good.
