I play on PlayStation 4 and there’s cross-play but if I don’t buy ps+ I cant play with my friend on Xbox

I’m trying to play with my friend online but I have to buy online (ps+) but my friend who has an Xbox don’t have that problem. Do to covid19 we can’t hang out in public☹️ So we tried playing Minecraft but we can’t play together because I have to pay to play pretty much. Other games like apex and fortnight don’t have that problem so Mojang please some how fix this I have nothing to do in my house the only game I have that I can really play is Minecraft and im running out of things to do in Minecraft.
