Tool Bar Nonfunctioning

I'm currently attempting to use the Pocket Edition and haven't use it since before the updates to D-Pad (which I also dislike, I wish they had left it alone) but now it seems as though I am unable to select anything from my tool bar or open inventory. Attempting to select a different item in the tool bar or open inventory interacts with the blocks that are behind them, either placing one of what I'm holding or destroying the block. This is really frustrating as it only seems to work maybe 1 of every 5 clicks/attempts (if that).
