Won raid but did not get hero of the village

I had 2 raiders left in a raid I started, and just as I was looking for them, they seem to have died on their own somehow and I instantly won, however I did not get the hero of the village effect. The game automatically gives hero of the village every time I win a raid. I checked to see if I was still in the village and I was, so it is not because I left the village. Does it not count if they just randomly die and I have to actually kill them to get hero of the village? They could not have just despawned since this is not a possibility.
